Travel Time and Cost of High Speed Rail

High speed rail travel has advantages over auto travel (faster, more fuel efficient) and over air travel (cheaper, less airport congestion, faster security and boarding, fewer weather delays). The exact advantages of each mode (rail, auto, air) varies for each route.

Below are the approximate travel times and estimated costs for travel between city pairs within regional corridors.

Value of Time: $42.10/hour11
Flight Cost: Q1 2013 average fare1

Of the 23 routes with regularly scheduled air travel, 21 of them are cheaper for HSR, with an average savings of $133. 6 of the 23 are faster by HSR than by air. The average time loss is 50 minutes.

By converting time to money equivalents, we can calculate the total benefit of HSR over air travel, considering travel time and cost differences. 17 of the 23 air routes have positive net benefits for HSR over air travel, with an average benefit of $98.

If energy prices increase in the future (as they almost certainly will), the cost benefits of HSR over air travel will be higher as diesel locomotives use less fuel per passenger mile than jets.
